It's hard to believe that the summer is coming to a close, but Labor Day is just around the corner. Schools are back in session and many fall sports practices have already begun. It will be hard to deny that fall is here once the Patriots kickoff their 2013 season in just a couple of short weeks. My summer officially ends when I return to teach at Woburn High and say goodbye to my weekdays at the parks and playgrounds with my two sons, Andrew and Nicholas. For me, there's no mistaking the signs that XC season is upon us. There's something in the air that makes it easier to run in the early morning hours. Most of my own runs now tend to gravitate towards the trails in and around town. My attention has turned from the big summer track meets (hope you all got a chance to see some of the spectacular performances at the World Champs in Moscow!) to cross country and early fall marathon results. We will begin our second full season as a Middle School XC team on Tuesday, September 3rd. This year's practices had to be adjusted to Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. I hope that this will work out for most of the team, but please remember that attendance is not compulsory for all practices and meets. The more you can make, the better! We will try to begin by 3:15 and end around 4:15. Meeting place will be the same as last year: in the parking lot across from the Coolidge Middle School. (For those of you that have been in Reading much longer than myself... I believe this is the former site of the Imagination Station Playground.) This year's roster already looks to be a bit larger than last year, with a number of new faces. As always, I will strive to provide an enjoyable and challenging program for runners of all abilities and experience. I hope all of you are as excited as I am to begin the season!
